Thunderbolts brings the next big team-up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring a bunch of familiar faces – Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and more, the film revolves around a group of outcasts. Amidst growing anticipation, the main villain has been revealed. In the latest trailer, a figure that remains in the shadows is called “The Void.” But comic book fans will know that it’s just one of his names.

Who is the Void?

In the comics, the Void is an entity that’s created when Robert Reynolds (also known as Bob) takes his school professor’s secret formula to get high. It turns out to be a failed attempt at creating the Super Soldier Serum, so naturally, it doesn’t get him high. Instead, it turns him into the Void. Bob gains abilities like superhuman strength, speed, flight and energy projection. Unfortunately, it also makes him evil. To counter the alter-ego, Bob subconsciously creates the Sentry. The superhero persona is linked to the Void, but instead of killing, he saves lives.

The Void and the Sentry are interlinked

From the comics, we know that the Void and the Sentry are linked. Bob tries to keep a lid on the malicious Void and is constantly fighting a battle within himself. At one point, Sentry teams up with Reed Richards and Doctor Strange to make the Earth forget him so that the Void vanishes. However, when Bob’s memories return, so does the Void.

The Void in the trailer of Thunderbolts

In the trailer of Thunderbolts, Lewis Pullman appears as a dark, shadowy figure. The Top Gun: Maverick actor is credited as Robert “Bob” Reynolds/ Sentry. He says, “I’m the Void. There’s no use fighting.” The clip sees Valentine Allegra de Fontaine saying, “He’s invincible, all-powerful, stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one.” The Void then goes on to show off his terrifying abilities, turning people into mere black shadows just by gesturing in their direction.”

In another trailer, Valentine’s assistant, Geraldine Viswanathan’s Mel, can be heard saying, “Sentry’s gone off the rails and he’s dangerous. The Avengers are gone. No one is coming to save the day.” This confirms that we’ll be seeing both alter-egos of the formidable character. The Thunderbolts have their work cut out for them.

Thunderbolts will release in Indian theatres on May 1, 2025.
