Val Kilmer’s cause of death has been confirmed.
The Top Gun actor, who passed away April 1 at age 65, died of pneumonia, according to a death certificate obtained by E! News.
Underlying causes that led to Val’s passing included acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and chronic respiratory failure, according to the outlet’s document. Squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer at the base of the tongue, was also listed as an underlying cause.
Additionally, the document listed significant conditions including malnutrition and tracheocutaneous fistula, a complication of the actor’s throat cancer treatment and tracheostomy.
Following Val’s passing, his body was cremated April 7 and his remains were released to his son, Jack Kilmer, 29, whom he shared with ex-wife Joanne Whalley.
Val’s daughter Mercedes Kilmer—whom he also shared with his ex—previously told the New York Times her father died of pneumonia when she confirmed his passing April 1.
