Exclusive: Khauf Writer Smita Singh On The Difference Between Horror And Horror Comedies

Khauf, a spine-chilling web series that has recently released on OTT focuses on dark horror, demonic possession and more. Filmfare recently chatted with actors Rajat Kapoor, Monika Panwar and writer Smita Singh about the new show and their definition of true horror. When asked about the processes that are involved in making horror palatable for the younger generation, Smita opened up about bringing elevated horror back, in place of horror comedies.

She said, “There was a time when you had elevated horror with The Babadook, Midsommar and now Hereditary, which has come quite recently. But what horror does is it opens up things that we can’t really confront. Jaha pe bhi ek conflict hota hain, jisko examine karne mein aapko takleef hota hain (We find it difficult to examine some conflicts), I think horror helps there. Horror requires every tool in the toolkit. Be it sound, atmospheric reactions, background music, acting – you have to utlize everything.”

She spoke about the horror projects being made in today’s day and age. The writer quipped, “Horror can be immersive and engaging in today’s date. It can explore so many issues. I think there is an audience that is not just looking for entertainment, but also engagement. I was starved for the kind of horror that I wanted to see.”

She also admits that the genre needs to be explored more. Delving deeper about the emotions raw horror brings out, Smita added, “Jumpscares are a part. It operates on two levels. The first level is the addictive thrill of watching the jumpscares. You don’t know where it’s going to come from. Then there is a deeper layer. You always explore a deeper layer with horror.”

Khauf is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
