Unlike anything we’ve seen before in the Star Wars universe, Starfighter will take place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. That places it the furthest into the franchise’s timeline so far. According to Lucasfilm, this movie will introduce completely new characters and storylines, diving into an unexplored era in the galaxy. Details are still under wraps, but it’s being billed as an original adventure rather than a continuation of previous story arcs.

Gosling and Levy made a surprise appearance at the event, getting the crowd hyped for what’s to come. Gosling wore a hat that read “Never Tell Me The Odds,” and said it was the perfect reminder for starting a journey like this. He added, “The Force is the fans,” drawing big cheers from the audience. Levy admitted that taking on a beloved universe like Star Wars is definitely intimidating, but said the team feels confident they’re creating something fans will love.

The film will follow the 2026 release of The Mandalorian & Grogu, as Lucasfilm continues building on its cinematic slate. Other exciting projects are also in development from directors like Taika Waititi, James Mangold, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, along with a planned trilogy from Simon Kinberg. For Gosling, who’s already racked up three Oscar nominations, Starfighter marks another big leap into blockbuster territory—and fans are definitely excited about it.
