Miller Gardner Case: Authorities Update Teen’s Cause of Death After Preliminary Ruling

Miller Gardner’s family may be closer to finding answers.

Two days after Yankees alum Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica Gardner announced the sudden loss of their 14-year-old son—who fell ill during a vacation in Costa Rica—officials ruled out a preliminary cause of death.

On March 24, Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency initially stated, per NBC News, that Miller likely died from suffocation after possibly ingesting a toxic substance. However, just a day later, new findings have altered the suspected manner of death.

“It was preliminarily ruled out that the cause of death was due to asphyxia,” Juan Pablo Avarado Garcia, a spokesperson for the agency, told NBC News in a March 25 statement, “due to the fact that at the time of the inspection of the body, no anomaly was observed at macro level in the respiratory tract.”

Adding that autopsy results could take two to three months, the organization reiterated that, “The case is under investigation by the agents of the Quepos and Parrita Subdelegation of the OIJ and at the moment it is being handled as a death under investigation.”
