Exclusive: Versatility Is The Key To Good Filmography: Sangeeth Shobhan

Sangeeth Shobhan is on cloud nine! His latest release Mad Square, directed by Kalyan Shankar, has turned out to be a blockbuster success – making him slowly turning out to be a household name. But his journey into the world of showbiz has been marked by determination for the craft. He was earlier part of films like Prema Vimaanam and Oka Family Story among others. But it was his character called DD in MAD and the second instalment Mad Square catapulted him into fame. Sangeeth is grateful to the audiences for the kind of love they showered on the comic caper.

“While we were shooting, we were confident that Mad Square would strike a chord with the audiences. But we never thought that the film is going to be such a huge hit. The love audiences are showing on us during our theatre and college visits is beyond words. It’s yet to sync, in” Sangeeth shares.

The super success of Mad Square means a lot to him. He says that it’s validation that audiences always welcome quirky ideas. When the first instalment was a big hit, it proved that such stories have the potential to be box office winners. He said, “Films like Mad Square are popcorn and fun entertainers, so a lot went into writing aspects to meet the expectations. The focus was on creating fun, humour and situations where there would be comedy of errors. I think that worked big time for the film.”

The actor shares that the success of Mad Square opened doors for him to explore various other genres. He says that versatility is the key to good filmography, and with new roles being written for actors they have a great opportunity to venture into uncharted territories. He added, “My short journey in films so far has been a roller coaster ride. But the learning curve has been constant and I’m trying to gain more insights into the film industry.”

His late father Shoban was a director. He was the one who gave Prabhas his first blockbuster hit Varsham (2004), and Sangeeth says that he has fond memories of him. His brother Santosh Shobhan is also an actor. When asked what was his reaction to the film, Sangeeth replies that he too was thrilled with the result. “Shobhan was not in the town when the film released, but he was constantly tracking the audiences’ responses and the numbers the film has been posting,” he replies, adding that both of them share a great bond. “We are like millennial brothers,” he laughs, and adds, “We generally don’t discuss work at home, but we keep each other updated about what we are doing.”

Sangeeth reveals that his mother was ecstatic after watching Mad Square. “She said it’s a hit film,” he recalls, adding that she was always confident of the film. He said, “While I was relieved at the success, she always exuded confidence. over the result.”

Even while he was celebrating the success of Mad Square, Sangeeth has announced his next film under director Manasa Sharma. The breezy entertainer is going to be produced by Niharika Konidela. Interestingly, three of them worked earlier together for the web series Oka Chinna Family Story where Manasa was the writer. “Our new project is like a reunion of sorts,” Sangeeth comments, adding that the film promises to be a fun and engaging treat for audiences. “I can’t wait to shoot for the film. The script has all the ingredients of a typical commercial entertainer yet high creatively,” he says, signing off.
